An exhibition featuring an extraordinary collection of paintings is on display at the MSV through August 31, 2008. British Paintings from the Berger Collection presents 31 major works from one of the most important collections of British art in the United States. Intriguing landscapes, portraits, sporting and equestrian images, and more comprise this exhibition. All the works in this display are drawn from the Berger Collection, which is housed in the Denver Art Museum. This special MSV exhibition marks the first time that these outstanding works have been displayed outside of Denver.

The exhibition is not only a visual delight, but also a virtual journey of British customs, culture, and places. From the poses and attire pictured in portraits, to the depiction of idyllic English countryside and sporting scenes, British Paintings from the Berger Collection transports the viewer to England through the talents of such great artists as Thomas Gainsborough, Allan Ramsay, Benjamin West, and more. The MSV is grateful to the Berger Collection Educational Trust, which has made the special Shenandoah Valley showing of this exhibition possible.

Mark your calendar for a special MSV lecture!

At 7 p.m. on July 17, Kathleen Stuart, the Curator of the Berger Collection at the Denver Art Museum, will provide a behind-the-scenes perspective on some of the masterpieces in the Berger Collection. This illustrated lecture is free to MSV Members and youth ages 18 and under; admission is $8 for all others.

  • Opening at the MSV this fall! Jed Hotchkiss: Shenandoah Valley Mapmaker, a special exhibition that tells the story of one man who played a major role in Stonewall Jackson's military successes. On display September 20, 2008 through May 10, 2009.
